Home page setup

The Toucan theme provides some handy options to create your homepage (front page). You can access the front page settings in Appearance -> Customize -> Theme Options -> Front Page, and make sure you are looking at your front page on the right when using these settings.

General settings

The first thing that you would want to set up is the general tab where you can optionally enable/disable and re-order sections that are provided for the front page template. Then you can manage the appearance of each area separately through its subsections.

Front page areas

  • Welcome – represents a place for your “about” text, “punchline” or your main product, and optionally you can have several slides if you want to share more info with your audience.
  • Featured area – represents a place to display one or more products that you want to point out, such as the most popular or recent products or your hand-picked products…
  • Latest products – this section displays your new products.
  • Featured products – this section displays products that are marked as featured.
  • Sale products – this section displays products that are “on-sale”.
  • Top rated products – this section displays products ordered by the best average rating.
  • Best selling products – this section displays your top-selling (most popular) products
  • Products w/ category filtering – in this section, you can view all your products that are filtered by its product category in a show/hide manner
  • Product categories – this sections lists your product categories
  • Blog – represents a place to display classic blog post listing of your latest articles
  • Custom content – as the name says, this is a blank space area that accepts any HTML or shortcode. Thus you can use it for any specific custom content you want to display on your home page

Note: Using the WordPress default front page setup

If you don’t want to use the Toucan front page template, you can simply disable it in the Appearance -> Customize -> Theme Options -> Front Page -> General section. By disabling this option, the theme will ignore all of the settings, and you can then choose to display your “Latest posts” or “A static page”, the two options that you get by default in WordPress under Settings -> Reading.
